"The sun's picking out the very best of the Alfa's styling, but unfortunately for the Giulia the exquisite face of a 159 poking out from behind a nearby cafe is visible only 20ft away and the comparison with the new car's bloated, plastcky mug isn't favourable."
"The rest is more successful: sensual and charismatic, and resolutely not a German clone... ...It's a salutary lesson for the XE in how to make a junior exec that's proud of its own identity."
"There is not a better interior in the small car game than the one in this A4. Maybe the Merc's C-class comes close for initial appeal, but spend time in the Audi and you come to realise that it's the Audi that feels the most robust, the most modern and the most satisfying. Take the navigation screen.. ... it makes the Alfa's look like a 1960s CCTV monitor."

3rd: This is tough on Alfa - all three could have won. It looks fresh, delivers on character and is faster and roomier than the XE. But Audi wins on quality, Jag wins on driving.
2nd: Jag hangs on to second by the thinnest of margins, its stirring dynamic purpose fractionally outflanking the Giulia. It's frustrating! A great drive let down by packaging.
1st: Petrolheads will sneer, but Audi absolutely knows what it's doing. A4 is the least compelling drive here, but it's refined, robust and has a sumptuous cabin. Brilliantly realised.
