In Whiplash, a kind of Rocky for jazz drummers currently generating Oscar buzz, student Andrew Neyman (Miles Teller) attends the fictional Shaffer Conservatory of Music in New York City. Several things set this student apart. When Neyman practices drums, he doesn’t use a metronome or instructional books, rather he works himself into a hysterical sweat—limbs shaking, body quaking, painful expressions contorting his face as his drum sticks create an aimless crescendo. His playing is so intense that a callus on Neyman’s right hand between thumb and forefinger inexplicably spouts blood. (In reality, aspiring right-handed drummers often develop a callus on their left hand, where the drum stick balances.) Neyman insults anyone who doesn’t understand his desire to be a great artist. This 19-year-old John Bonham wannabe has a few problems, the central one being his deranged band instructor, Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons), who screams, throws chairs and generally berates his cowering students in a search for musical genius.
