Now that I've had it for a bit I can give you a better comparison to the Corvette. In theory their performance is comparable, although I think the handling with the Tesla might be a bit better.
With the Corvette and any other ICE powered car, the maximum horsepower is obtained at higher RPMs. This means that a skilled driver can shift into the appropriate gear at a given speed to get into the engines sweet spot. This can be difficult especially on the highway at higher speeds. It requires practice and skill. I also suspect that the power from an ICE is pulsating as the cylinders fire which cause the tires to have a tendency to lose traction. This is why, especially off the line at low speed, overpowered super-cars tend to be "tire-limited"
With the Tesla, there is none of that. The only skill required is pressing the accelerator to the floor. The smooth even power delivered to the wheels seems to drastically reduce loss of traction even at maximum acceleration. The result is that with normal drivers, there is absolutely no comparison. Unless you are racing against a professional driver, I don't think *anything* on the road has the slightest chance against the Tesla under 100 mph.
Over 100 mph, which I don't care about, the Vette or any other supercars' high gears would pull away from the Tesla in a hurry. Even the majority of motorcycles on the road are slower. The few that are faster would need to be ridden by a suicidal maniac who knows how to keep the front wheel on the ground.
Unlike the Corvette Z06, which is really designed to be a street legal racing machine, the Tesla is a luxury sedan. The quiet smooth ride reminds me of a Lexus or Mercedes. I suspect the Tesla may also be one of the safest cars on the road.
