85.0http://www.carfolio.com/specifications/models/car/?car=253748This car has the lowest CO2 emissions of any non-electric car on sale in the UK today. Its 85g/km output just betters the Smart ForTwo's 87g/km, and it has the considerable benefit of providing five seats, and four doors, to the Smart's pair of each.
Any doubts you might have about a 1.1 litre diesel-powered car - that it could take until next week to get you to the shops, for example - are annihilated in the first few miles. This Rio is quite a brisk car - faster than a 0-60mph time of 14.9sec might suggest - its engine pulling effectively through the gears as well as in sixth on the motorway. The three cylinder idles with a slightly unusual but pleasing beat, revs keenly and sounds smooth too. Couple this to an excellent gearchange and you have a car that's a pleasure to drive, especially given its economy ambitions.
The smaller 15in wheels that this Rio rides on also improve its ride, allowing small bumps to be swallowed up with a smoothness that the more expensive, bigger wheeled versions struggle to match, while at speed, this Kia is quiet enough to make a surprisingly effective long-distance car. Keen drivers who enjoy twisty roads will find this a less satisfying machine than the Ford Fiesta - it doesn't corner as sharply, and its steering sometimes feels a little artificial - but it's entirely adequate and feels secure.
The Rio's cabin is roomy, the seats are comfortable and the dashboard well laid out and finished to a good standard, although the Fiesta's looks more imaginative. However, some of the more colourful interior finishes give the Rio a pleasing lift. Storage space is plentiful, you get sockets for iPods and rear seat occupants will be reasonably comfortable. But the boot, though adequate, is not as capacious as those of some rivals.
