Kimi Raikkonen, a man on a mission in Monaco

Monaco is a hard nut to crack. Just ask the drivers who have faced the challenge of racing on the streets of the Principality. You will have heard them say many times that the barriers are unforgiving, and this is the truth. The tiniest mistake is enough to hit the wall. Imagine how difficult it is for a driver who has not had the chance to drive there in the junior categories to have their first experience of Monaco in an F1 car.

Kimi arrived at Monaco in just that situation in 2001, unlike most other F1 drivers. His teammate, Nick Heidfeld, raced there in F3, F3000 and in F1 with the Prost GP team a year earlier. So he knew his way around. The bottom line is that Kimi had to get to know the track. And quickly.

There was only one way to find out. His Sauber race engineer, Jacky Eeckelaert, told this blog: “I did a few laps with Kimi on a scooter to show where to put the wheels and where not, but this was when the road was open to traffic, and there was a traffic jam everywhere, and by that it was not possible to have a clean look at the racing lines”.

But on Thursday, Raikkonen had to face Monaco circuit for the first time during the busy free practice sessions. He was informed by Jacky that the grip would be very low, and that he should have kept the car away from the barriers and take it easy.

“The laptime evolution due to the track improvement as the rubber is laid down is bigger than what you can achieve by any setup changes and driving”, Jacky explains.

So Raikkonen had to learn his way around the track, adjust tire pressure, brake blanking, engine blanking, ride high settings at top speed and the “usual stuff” teams did in that period. Things moved on since then and drivers are running more complicated programmes these days.

“I also told him, the day before on the scooter, that the tunnel corner was flat out (full throttle, no lift, no braking)”, remembers Eeckelaert.

After Kimi’s first run he returned to the pits and reported that “everything felt normal”. “Then he asked me if I was sure that the tunnel corner was flat. My answer was ‘yes’”, adds Jacky. Trying to keep an F1 car with 850bhp flat out in a tunnel that you saw first time is not easy. Watch on television and it looks simple. But stand trackside in the tunnel as the cars blast through the right-hander and you see just how much they move around on the bumps.

The engineers made a few adjustments on the tyre pressures and after having a quick look in the telemetry data, Kimi climbed on the car to have his second run. The people on the pitwall were surprised seen the Finn taking the tunnel corner flat out on the out lap.

“That’s what I call having confidence in your race engineer and even more in your own ability as a racing driver”, reflects Eeckelaert. But he couldn’t do more than that because he ran into brake calliper problems and the session was over for him since repair took a while.”

Qualifying time and Kimi managed to get P15, outqualifying Heidfeld by 0.180 secs. So he started his first ever race in Monaco ahead of his teammate, an impressive achievement. But the race did not go as planned.

After 25 laps Kimi reported an issue with the engine. It was misfiring, so he had to pit. The Finn climbed out of the car and along with his engineers they checked the data. A faulty wheelspeed sensor “thought” that there was lots of wheel spin and cut the engine power down. Remember, this was in the days when traction control was legal.

“I told Kimi that changing it takes a lot of time, but what I proposed was just to get back in the car. I disconnected the traction control system and then he could do another 40 laps till the end of the race, just gaining experience for next year”, adds Jacky. But Kimi was already 4 laps down.

“Obviously I warned Kimi that without traction control the risk of going off is huge, as the V10 ignition maps were not smoothed out as is done nowadays were Traction Control (TC) is not allowed anymore, and therefore without TC the engine is very aggressive. ‘OK’ he replied and went out”

He made no errors and he finished the race in last position. Drivers like H.H.Frentzen (Jordan), J.P.Montoya (Williams) and N.Heidfeld (Sauber) didn’t finish the race after suffering damage. But look at the fastest laps of the race and Kimi’s name appears on on the 6th spot with the fastest time on Lap 60 … without traction control!

Definitely a man on a mission!

F1 2013 News: Agent Claims Fernando Alonso Committed to Ferrari

Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has no desire to move to a new team next season, according to his management head, Flavio Briatore. The Italian's comments come after growing speculation that Alonso will move to Ferrari's championship rivals Red Bull for next season; the Milton Keynes outfit will have one race seat vacant after Australian Mark Webber retires this year.

"Alonso has never said he wants to leave. Ferrari-Alonso remains a winning pairing. No. No temptation whatsoever," Briatore told Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Spaniard, a double world champion under Briatore while at Renault, has struggled over the past couple of seasons with the scarlet cars and is presently third in the 2013 Formula 1 world championship; he has 133 points to leader Sebastian Vettel's 172 with Lotus' Kimi Raikkonen in between on 134.

He finished fifth in last weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix, a disappointing result given he lost second place in the standings to Raikkonen and slipped even further behind Vettel. The Ferrari has been mediocre for most of this campaign, requiring Alonso to muscle it over the finish line in high points scoring positions on more than one occasion.

Alonso's future at the team came under doubt after a cryptic comment to Italian press outlets. According to ESPN F1, he was asked what he wanted for his birthday (29 July) and he said he wanted a faster car.

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo was quick to criticise Alonso and reportedly told him:

"All the great champions who have driven for Ferrari have always been asked to put the interests of the team above their own. This is the moment to stay calm, avoid polemics and show humility and determination in making one's own contribution, standing alongside the team and its people both at the track and outside it."

Meanwhile, Red Bull boss Christian Horner has been surprisingly quiet so far, over the rumours. The team principal spoke to reporters after the race at the Hungaroring.

"We are in a fortunate position where there is quite a lot of interest in the seat for next year. Any conversations with any driver remain confidential. Of course, there has been quite a few drivers expressing interest in the seat. Is [Alonso] available? You ask him," he commented.

An Alonso-Vettel partnership would undoubtedly be an exciting one, although if it is in the best interests of the sport to have two world champions in the same team remains to be seen. Nevertheless, this is not the first time such links have been made.

The only difference is that the last time it was made, Ferrari were doing the talking. In January, before the start of the season, the scarlet cars' boss Stefano Domenicali refused to rule out the possibility Vettel could move to Maranello and replace Felipe Massa.

Could Vettel and Alonso one day be part of a dream team. I think our President has already commented on this subject several times: a dream team is fantastic if it is correctly managed," he said.

However, those rumours were quickly rebuffed by Vettel himself and di Montezemolo.

Kimi Raikonen u Ferariju?

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has made it clear that it is Ferrari that matters at the end of the day, not the drivers.

Tension rose at the Italian stable in the wake of the Hungarian Grand Prix when Fernando Alonso told reporters that he wanted a car that "the others have" as his 32nd birthday present.

His remark did not go down well at Ferrari with di Montezemolo reportedly phoning the Spaniard to let him know all about it.

This minor rift comes amidst speculation that Alonso could be seeking a move to Red Bull Racing as Mark Webber's replacement.

But rather than sooth any ruffled emotions, di Montezemolo has made it clear in an interview with Corriere della Sera's sports editor Daniele Dallera where his priorities rest.

"Our fans should never be forgotten, they deserve respect and therefore they are entitled to get satisfaction. We must work for Ferrari and for them," said the Italian.

"Let me make it clear that it's Ferrari I'm interested in.

"Drivers, we've had a lot, some very good, some great, but drivers come and go, while Ferrari remains."

Speaking specifically about the Alonso situation, he said: "Fernando is a great driver and I understand him, he is a bit like me: he wants to win.

"He must just remember that one wins and loses together and for its part, Ferrari must give him a car capable of starting from the front two rows... It doesn't sit well with me seeing our car is not competitive.

"That's why I intervened, even if I didn't want to abuse my authority over my men. However, it had to be done. But how? We started so well, we had begun the World Championship with a very competitive car, maybe even considered the best. But something happened and instead of moving forward we went backwards.

"Therefore the right attitude, the one I am taking from now on is as follows: understand the mistakes, fix them and after this careful analysis develop the car in the right direction.

"We must put our heads down in this return match, as I describe this second part of the season after the break, a break I don't like, but we have to adhere to it."

He added: "Fernando has given a lot in these last years and I repeat, his disappointment, which came about mainly after Silverstone, where all of us expected to be more competitive, is understandable. But I didn't like some attitudes, a few words, some outbursts. And I said so...

"I reminded everyone, including the drivers, that Ferrari comes before everything, the priority is the team. Rather like a family father pointing out the need to respect some family rules: I wish to underline the concept of family values...

"Felipe is a quick driver and a great guy. But in the past days, we were very clear with him: both he and us need results and points. Then, at some point, we will look one another in the eye and decide what to do."

However, it's not just his drivers who need to pull their weight, team boss Stefano Domenicali also needs to show results which di Montezemolo believes he has done even though the team is still lacking a Drivers' title under his reign.

"Stefano was born and raised with us from all managerial points of view. But as a sportsman, he knows he needs results.

"However, when one talks about Domenicali, one truth is king: under his management we have one one Constructors' title and come very close to three Drivers' titles. Two of those we could easily have won and then people's opinion of Domenicali would be very different.

"There's one thing I remind him of very often: he has to get the most out of every individual in his organisation, never be satisfied and if necessary, take some drastic and painful decisions."
