BMW 0W30 carries a LL-01 FE approval and is API SN and ACEA A5/B5 rated for high fuel efficiency. BMW discontinued 5W30 in favor of 0W30 in Fall 2016 as part of an effort to reduce emissions on cold start-up and improve fuel economy. BMW now recommends 0W30 for all models that called for a LL-01 5W30.
The BimmerWorld view: We recommend this 0W30 formulation only for use in recent turbocharged BMWs only. Why not for non-turbo models? This oil was formulated specifically for turbo BMW engines from 2007 forward. BMW claims this lower viscosity results in lower emissions and better fuel economy while meeting the criteria for BMW's extended oil change intervals. However, for non-turbo models, particularly the older and higher mileage naturally aspirated BMWs, we believe the lower viscosity does not offer enough protection, particularly at peak oil temps. On these non-turbo applications that previously used the BMW 5W30 oil we recommend using the Red Line 5W30 or Euro 5W30 (higher ZDDP) premium oils. For cars that see higher temperatures, driving schools and track time, we recommend the Red Line 10W40 or 15W50 high performance oil for best protection and lower oil consumption on higher mileage engines.
