The Equus won the award by scoring a "Good" in front, side, rollover and rear crash protection. The Equus also manged to surpass the stringent IIHS requirement for roof strength, as the big sedan was found to have a roof that can support a
force equal to 4.87 times its weight. To receive a "Good" score, a roof must be able to support at least four times its weight. The Equus also features electronic stability control; another must-have to receive a Top Safety Pick designation.

ARLINGTON, Virginia — The 2011 Hyundai Equus qualifies as a Top Safety Pick in the large-car category, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The Equus sedan, the flagship model of Korean automaker Hyundai, has not yet been rated under the new, more rigorous five-star safety rating system of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, however.
The IIHS said on Thursday that it named the Equus to the prestigious safety roll call because it is rated well for front, side, rollover and rear crash protection and it has electronic stability control.
The Equus is one of 15 large cars that have been named 2011 Top Safety Picks. It is the second Hyundai in the large-car category to earn the designation. The 2011 Hyundai Genesis is also a Top Safety Pick.
The Equus joins such large cars as the Buick LaCrosse, BMW 5 Series, Cadillac CTS sedan, Ford Taurus and Toyota Avalon in the Top Safety Pick category.
