Road & Track lined up the Corvette ZR1 next to the Corvette C6.R ALMS racing car to see how they'd compete in a straight line. Notice we didn't say "drag" or "drag race," since this isn't at the track and we can't tell the distance of the contest.

The C6.R is based on the ZR1, but comes in with about 500 horsepower to push its 2,745-pound weight and uses a sequential transmission and slicks. The ZR1 works with 638 horses but has 3,345 pounds to get going through a six-speed manual transmission and street tires.

I’ll be kind and say that the 638 hp ZR1 is “difficult” at best to drive fast. Around town, it’s actually quite good, but on a racetrack or when you want to be a hooligan, this car ONLY wants to kill you.  To get the most of this beast, you had better bring your “A” game. Approaching the limits of what this car is capable of is hard work.

Corvette Blows Out 60 Candles For Its Anniversary



This year Corvette turns 60. Chevy does have an elaborate plan to celebrate the bugger at the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed, but before that here’s a small birthday party the held back in America in which the 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible – made to mark the 60th anniversary of the car – blows out 60 candles around a corner. It could have been a more dramatic powersliding affair, but hey. Watch it after the jump.

The Chevrolet Corvette 427 Convertible blends elements of the Z06 and ZR1 models to create the fastest and most-capable convertible in Corvette’s history. Its heart is the 427-cubic-inch (7.0L) LS7 engine from the Corvette Z06. Rated at 505 horsepower (377 kW) and 470 lb.-ft. of torque (637 Nm), it is the most powerful engine ever installed in a production Corvette convertible – and, like the Z06, the 427 Convertible is only available with a six-speed manual transmission.

Inside Line's Road Test Editor Mike Monticello headed to the Streets of Willow Springs to do a proper comparison on the 1.8-mile road course north of Los Angeles.

The 2013 Chevrolet Corvette is slated to be the final year for the sixth generation of the fabled American performance car (better known as the C6) and as we enter the final model year for this generation of the Corvette - there will be a new blue exterior option and a quartet of black wheel options to send off the C6.



The 2013 Chevrolet Corvette brings about the 8th and final year for the C6 generation, with the C7 Corvette expected to drop for the 2014 model year. 8 years worth of new models is a long run for many vehicles but for the Chevrolet Corvette, this has been a pretty average length of run – kept fresh by adding new features, new packages and new trimlines since debuting in 2005 as a 2006 model year vehicle. Little is known about what will come for the Corvette in the 7th generation when it arrives for the 2014 model year but we have an idea of what GM will do to send off the current Corvette in 2013.

The 2013 Chevrolet Corvette will remain much the same as the 2012 model year Vettes but for the final model year of the C6, the Corvette will reportedly feature a new exterior option named Night Race Blue. According to the folks at Corvette Blogger, this new color will look very similar (if not a bit darker) than the car shown here on the right. It is unclear whether this new blue will replace one of the other two blues currently in the Corvette lineup (Carlisle Blue Metallic, Supersonic Blue Metallic)*** or if it will simply join these two colors but with the current two blue hues being very different than what we expect to see from the new Night Race Blue option – there looks to be plenty of room for three blues in the 2013 Corvette lineup. It is unclear whether Night Race Blue will be a standard color (no additional charge) or if it will demand the $300 upcharge that comes with the Supersonic Blue Metallic option – or even the $850 charge for colors like Velocity Yellow or Crystal Red Tintcoat.

***Update: We have been reminded by Kerbeck Corvette that Carlisle Blue was a one year color and will not be offered in 2013. This leaves the new Night Race Blue and Supersonic Blue Metallic. Thanks to Kerbick for the assistance!

In addition to the new blue shade, the 2013 Chevrolet Corvette will do away with the Competition Grey wheel choices to make room for some sexy gloss black finishes on the same wheels. The basic wheel designs will remain the same for the base Corvette, the Grand Sport, the Z06 and the ZR1 but where the 2012 model year offers option wheels that are finished in a satin grey, gloss black will be available for 2013. This includes a black option for the basic 5-spoke design for the base Corvette and Grand Sport, the 10-spoke “Spider” design that is optional for the Z06 and the standard wheel design for the ZR1 super-Vette. Corvette Blogger did not offer any detail on prospective pricing for the black wheels for the 2013 Corvette but with the Competition Grey wheels for 2012 adding an extra $395 – we would expect that the black optional wheels for 2013 would be in the same price range.

Corvette Racing ended a long dry spell by winning the GT class of the American Le Mans Series at Long Beach, capitalizing on collisions by the Team RLL BMWs which dominated last season.
Corvettes finished first and fourth in GT. Oliver Gavin and Tom Milner got their first GT win in the #4 Corvette C6 ZR1, beating Joey Hand and Dirk Müller’s #56 BMW M3 by 5.68 seconds. The BMW was under hot pursuit by Scott Sharp in the #01 ESM Ferrari he shares with Johannes van Overbeek, which finished third, only 2.62 seconds behind the BMW and gaining.
“It certainly was a great job from Corvette Racing, putting together a great car right off the truck,” Oliver Gavin told alms.com. “I learned a lot from Tommy [Milner]. He was a bit of a Guinea pig for me today, seeing how the tires lasted, seeing it through the longer run. Tommy did a great job staying out of trouble in the first few laps. He gave me advice on time management.
“I knew we were third going out. But I got ahead of Scott Sharp quite quickly. It was harder to get ahead of Joerg, I managed to squeeze through. Then it was about managing and saving the tires. It got a bit hairy, with extra traffic, and there were a lot of cars going off. It kept you on your toes. I had enough gap to stay ahead of the BMW.”

The second Corvette finished fourth. The #3 Corvette was damaged in a first-lap accident which also sidelined the #55 BMW. Despite the damage, Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen managed to bring the car home only eight seconds behind the ESM Ferrari.
Two incidents changed the complexion of the GT race. On the first lap, Duncan Ende in the #25 PC Dempsey Racing Oreca tangled with Antonio Downs in the #8 Merchant Services PC Oreca. Jorg Mueller in the #55 RLL BMW slammed on his brakes to avoid the par, which got him rear-ended by Antonio Garcia in the #3 Corvette.
Apparently Mueller hit the PC cars anyway, because he ruined his cooling system. Garcia’s Corvette lost its hood, which caused it to understeer for the rest of the race.

On lap 17, Tom Milner squeezed underneath Joey Hand in the #56 BMW to take the class elad. Hand, concentrating on the Corvette ahead of him, cut across the nose of Guy Smith in the #16 Dyson Racing P1 Lola-Mazda which was about to overtake up the inside. Hand clipped Smith’s left front wing, breaking it while cutting his own right rear tire. Hand had to pit, which cost him a lot of track position and gave Milner in the Corvette time to open a gap.
“I got the lead in the opening stint,” said Tom Milner. “I was behind Joey in the BMW. I felt I was quick behind him. I just waited for an opportunity. He got held up exiting turn 8 or 7—I stayed on it and was able to sneak by there.

The Arrinera will start off at $160,000, not including the destination charge and taxes. It'll be equipped with the Corvette ZR1's supercharged LS9 6.2-liter V8, but with some added power that brings total output to 650hp and 604lb-ft of torque. It can go from 0 to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds, do the quarter-mile in exactly 11 seconds and reach a top speed of 211 mph. It also weighs just 2,866 lbs.
