There are a lot of recent cases where people are choosing to run supposedly ‘uprated’ hybrid turbo’s. There is certainly a good case for them in customers eyes, as on the face of it they can be relatively inexpensive for the advertised gains however there is also a huge lack of understanding about potential limitations and therefore high expectations that won’t always be met. We have tested numerous hybrid turbo’s over the years, the biggest issue you will see is a rise in EGT’s to dangerous levels when the turbo’s are run at higher boost levels than the factory ones. The housings are normally just too much of a limitation. Yes you can get a little more power from them, mostly in the midrange but at a cost to safety. If you try to push them too much you will result in running the vehicle at levels that SRG would not condone and reducing the lifespan of components. If you run them at safe levels you typically see very little gain over the standard turbo.
