2014 Chevrolet Corvette C7 Stingray Debuts in Detroit

The seventh generation of the Chevrolet Corvette has just made its world debut in Detroit and we have to tell you that this is way more than just a generation change. GM has turned to the "Stingray" designation, one that it only uses for special models, for the C7 and the company promises massive upgrades both in terms of sheer performance and feel.

Under the sculpted hood, we find GM's new LT1 V8 unit. This marks the debut of the Gen 5 range of Small Block engines, which means that it's packed with technology.

The powerplant makes use of features such as direct injection, continuously variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation. The V8 has a displacement of 6.2 liters, delivering 450 hp and a peak torque of 450 lb-ft (610 Nm). In addition to that, the torque curve is phenomenal - for example, at 2,000 rpm the unit is already delivering 295 lb-ft (400 Nm).

Customers can choose between a seven-speed manual and a six-speed automatic with paddles. The manual offers rev matching on both downshifts and upshifts and also adapts to the gear you're shifting into, whichever one you choose. What's more, the engineers have not managed to make the cylinder deactivation work together with the manual gearbox.

The unit allows the C7 Corvette to complete the 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) sprint in under 4 seconds. For the sake of comparison, we'll tell you that the C6 'Vette needed 4.2 seconds for the job.

Despite the increase in performance, the C7 is less thirsty, as it comes with a highway fuel efficiency of 26 mpg (9 liters per 100 km).

The body structure is 60 % stiffer and 99 lbs (45 kg) lighter compared to the C6's one, thanks to solutions like aluminum construction for the chassis, as well as the use of carbon fiber for the hood and removable roof panel. As for the distribution of the weight, the new Corvette offers the ideal 50/50 setup.

The Corvette now uses an electric power steering system and to make sure that it offers the right feel, engineers have increased the stiffness of the system by an incredible 500 percent.

The car incorporates a Drive Mode Selector which allows one to choose one of the five settings available: weather, eco, tour, sport, track. This controls the magnetic ride control suspension, valve-fitted exhaust, throttle pedal map, ECU map, steering assistance, active fuel management, as well as the way in which the stability and traction control act.

There's also a Z51 Performance Package, which comes fully loaded with an electronically-controlled limited slip diff, a dry sump system, custom gear ratios, larger brakes, as well as Bilstein dampers that use magnetic ride control and extra coolers for the diff, transmission and brakes. On the skidpad, this achieves up to 1 G of lateral acceleration, a value that places it in the same league as the C6 Corvette Grand Sport.

The Corvette Stingray rides on new 18x8.5-inch front and 19x10-inch rear wheels, and if you go for the aforementioned Z51 Performance Package you'll get 19 x 8.5-inch front and 20 x 10-inch rear forged aluminum wheels.

The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette C7 is scheduled to land is US showrooms in the third quarter of the current year, but the pricing hasn't been announced yet.

Не ми се свиѓа воланот... Али и тоа би и’ простил ;)

Ми се свиѓа што се мењаат брзини фино-лепо со рачка, а не со палки на волан :)

Materials have been significantly upgraded over the previous Corvette, which basically required an upgrade to the optional leather package to be adequate. Now, the standard package is much more detailed, and build quality is noticeably improved--leather-wrapped surfaces and high-quality plastics abound.

Under the hood is a new LT1 6.2 litre “Small Block” V8 with 450 hp and 610 Nm. GM points out that the LT1 makes 68 Nm more low-end torque than the previous 6.2 V8, matching the 7.0 litre LS7 engine from the 2013 Corvette Z06 from 1,000 to 4,000 rpm. Power-to-weight ratio is better than the Porsche 911 Carrera and Audi R8, GM says.



The LT1′s performance comes from combining tech like direct injection, Active Fuel Management and continuously variable valve timing with an advanced combustion system. It’s backed by a choice of active exhaust systems that are less restrictive than the previous gen, due in part to an increase in diameter from 2.5 to 2.75 inches.

The standard system offers a 13% improvement in airflow and features a pair of butterfly valves that contribute to improved refinement at cruising speeds when the engine is operating in fuel-saving four-cylinder mode.

The V8 is mated to either a six-speed paddle-shift automatic or a Tremec TR6070 seven-speed manual with Active Rev Matching for upshifts and downshifts. The latter comes with a new dual-mass flywheel and dual-disc clutch.



Stopping duties are courtesy of standard Brembo brakes with four-piston fixed calipers, holding 320 mm front and 338 mm rear rotors. They have 35% more swept area than previous-gen brakes and stopping distance is improved 9%.

A Z51 Performance Package includes specific close-ratio gearing and an electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD), along with 45 mm piston Bilstein dampers (35 mm Bilsteins stock) and Magnetic Ride Control. It makes the Stingray capable of 1g in cornering acceleration. This track-oriented package also adds brake-cooling ducts, a unique rear spoiler and additional air deflectors.

Early sales made it seem, though, that not many outside GM were asking that question.

"You can see why GM was doing some soul-searching" about whether Corvette was worth keeping, Warner says.

Forceful GM engineer Zora Arkus Duntov took over as Corvette chief engineer and the 1955 Vette got a V-8 to replace the six-cylinder. Duntov insisted on a four-speed manual transmission, to replace the two-speed Powerglide automatic. And he pushed for, and got, fuel injection starting in 1957, replacing the industry-standard carburetors. Fuel injection can deliver more power on less fuel but back then it was a costly and exotic system.

By the mid-1970s, in Schorr's view, the car "started getting soft; bigger, heavier, emasculated." Some of the small pickups of the time, with stick shifts, were more fun to drive, he says.

Chevy's Corvette history acknowledges that the C3, built from 1968 - 1982, was battered by "an upheavel in the auto industry." At the start of its run, C3 had a big-block V-8 rated 435 horsepower. By 1975, it was a pale shadow, featuring a small-block V-8 rated a paltry 165 hp, about 20% less that the Duntov's original 195-hp small-block V-8 in 1955.

At the same time, we have the return of a legendary name. The base 2014 model will be known as the Corvette Stingray-one word, as used from 1969 to 1977. The revival of that once-potent badge will have people asking, "Why now?" but Chevy is looking to double Corvette sales in coming years. GM's marketing-driven response is likely to be, "Why not?"
