Just like an automobile needs gasoline (fuel) in order to operate at high levels of performance, your body needs the same thing. Glycogen, or sugar, is what your body uses as fuel. The same way that your car uses more fuel when you drive it "harder", so does your body. When you work out really hard your glycogen levels go down. Once it’s gone it needs to be regenerated but your body takes a little time doing so. One of the best ways to replenish your fuel, is with the help of a post-workout recovery drink.
Studies have shown that with the right nutrition during the very first hour after a workout, you can increase your bodies ability to recover dramatically. So a recovery drink is very important. If you don’t replenish your bodies fuel tank after a workout, then your body will need to find some source of fuel for energy and will break down the muscle. Muscle that you have worked long and hard to gain.
A lot of people start a rigorous exercise program without knowing the importance of a recovery drink. I’ve learned the hard way during the course of my fitness journey just how important a good recovery drink is. Let’s examine why a recovery drink is important as well as my recommendations to implement it into your fitness plan.
Workout programs like P90x or Insanity are anaerobic type programs in that your heart rate is above 80% for an extended period of time. Carbs are a major source of energy during anaerobic exercise. Furthermore, carbs such as glucose and glycogen are stored in the muscle for immediate anaerobic energy needs. Keep in mind that you don’t have an infinite supply of carbs as they are limited.
All of this builds up to a depletion of carbs in your muscle tissue during a typical P90x or Insanity workout. You need to quickly introduce carbs back into your body upon completing your workout to begin the proper recovery process. The window of opportunity to do this is approximately 30 – 45 minutes afterwards.
Ideally you want a carbs to protein ration in your recovery drink of 4:1. Too many people make the mistake of thinking your typical protein shake is an adequate recovery drink. Protein is simply just too slow absorbing for a recovery drink. In addition, it’s glucose and glycogen that are depleted in your muscles during exercise that need to be replenished. Thus, sugars and carbs are necessary to replenish those depleted inventories. Properly utilizing a recovery drink will help in reducing post-workout soreness as well as begin the muscle repair process much quicker and more effectively.
