A mild hybrid (often called MHEV – Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is a type of car that uses a small electric motor to assist the gasoline or diesel engine, but cannot drive on electric power alone.
🔍 How a Mild Hybrid Works
• Has a small electric motor and small battery.
• The motor helps the engine during:
• acceleration
• starting from a stop
• gear changes
• The battery is charged by:
• braking (regenerative braking)
• the engine itself
🚗 What a Mild Hybrid Can Do
• Improve fuel efficiency (usually 5–15%)
• Reduce CO₂ emissions
• Make start/stop smoother
• Increase engine torque briefly
🚫 What It Cannot Do
• It cannot run on electricity alone.
• It cannot give long EV range like a full hybrid or plug-in hybrid.
