- Nissan Sunny GTI-R (1990-1995) - Built to do the dirty on Escorts.
- Peugeot 106 Rallye (1994-1998) - Flyweight Pug punched above its weight.
- Citroen Saxo VTS (1997-2003) - Pug 106's excellent evil twin.
- Ford Focus RS Mk1 (2002-2003) - A Blue Oval for the big-balled.
- Honda Civic Type R (2001-2005) - Rubbish around own, dazzling on track.
- Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk5 (2005-2008) - Livability meets liveliness.
- RenaultSport Clio 200 (2009-2013) - French for flattering, forgiving and fast.
- RenaultSport Megane 250 (2009-2012) - Supercar drivers beware...

Audi S3:
A place in the pantheon of great hot hatches requires more than dynamic excellence; it requires greatness. And good though the Audi is, we don't feel we'll be lauding it in 2023.

Tricky one. A lifetime on from the epic original, this Golf is as complete a GTI as you can get. Does it stir the soul like the Mk1? No. Is it better? Yes. Best ever? We think so.. Until the Mk8?

Ford Fiesta ST:
If you'd asked before we'd driven it, we might have scoffed. But this car is a throwback to the greats in that it's so much more than a sum of its parts - a proper, total, need-no-more hot-hatch.

Peugeot 208 GTi:
Denied a place in hot hatch history only because it doesn't get to your heart. We applaud Peugeot for a return to form, but nobody's beating their chest for this car - or its seating position.

Renault Clio RS:
Blame the marketing men, the green lobby, the zeitgeist, but at the Renaultsport Hatch Legends Reunion Dinner, this five-door, turbo, automatic Clio won't be sitting at the top table.
