In a remarkable testament to Toyota’s engineering, 72-year-old New Zealander Graeme Hebley’s 1993 Toyota Corolla has surpassed 2,000,000 kilometers (approximately 1,242,742 miles) on its original engine and transmission. Hebley, a newspaper delivery contractor since the 1960s, purchased the vehicle in 2000 when it had 80,000 kilometers on the odometer. He drives nearly 5,000 kilometers weekly, traveling six days a week from Wellington to New Plymouth and back. To maintain its performance, the Corolla undergoes servicing every two weeks at Guthrie’s Auto Care in Whanganui, where mechanic John Sherman has been overseeing its maintenance for over two decades. The car remains largely original, with only routine replacements such as the cambelt and wheel bearings. Hebley attributes the vehicle’s longevity to consistent maintenance and Toyota’s reliable design, expressing confidence that his Corolla will “go forever.”
